How to get Windows cheap (or even for free) | PCWorld

Windows 8. I saw a post here that said that there will be a similar version for Windows 10 with similar pricing, however now that the OS has launched, I am not finding it anywhere.

Has this particular SKU not been made available yet? If not, is it going to be available in the future and do we have any sort of release window Pun unintended?

Thanks again for your time. Also, I apologize if this is not the place to post this. I did not see a more appropriate place to post this. Edit: Thank you to JulianBe! It has been confirmed that the link above to purchase the Student version of 8.

From there you can upgrade to Windows I have also seen from multiple replies to this thread that various sales representatives have stated that there will be a version of Windows 10 made available in the future.

I am not going to mark this question as answered until we have some firm details. Until then, please feel free to use the link above to purchase Windows 8. Update: The link for the Windows 8.

Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn't help. To my knowledge, you can still buy Windows 8. I just checked and the link I provided above is still active.

I also added the download to my shopping cart and it seems to be working. Since this still seems to be a viable way for us students to purchase a Windows OS I may go this route before it disappears. After all, we can upgrade from Windows 8. I don't know if they are actually going to be releasing a Windows 10 version with student pricing. Given that the school year is about to start and this hasn't appeared yet, I am guessing that it isn't going to be happening this year.

Update: Tried buying Windows 8. Given my school is involved in the DreamSpark program and provides free access to Office , I am guessing their list for school verification is no longer active. I will try to provide other documentation when I am able to and will post their response. I am not hopeful though. This is very upsetting Microsoft. This, and the fact that this forum post has not gotten any sort of official response.

But wait, this doesn't make sense. Why would they remove the Windows 8. Why would they not let us buy their product? This just doesn't make sense to me. I was searching on the internet about this and some guy posted on a site that the offer is reachable. You have to buy the normal version and upon payment select "I'm a student" but I can't find that so I think this is not official. I haven't seen that either.

I don't know that the Windows 8. I was just speculating based on my experience. It's possible they just don't have my school system on their list. It doesn't really make sense but it is very possible. When I get the desire to go through the hassle of providing documentation I will let everyone here know what happened. It, unfortunately, makes sense from a financial perspective to remove the Windows 8.

The hope is that we go "Well to heck with it. I need it now. I can't wait any longer". Sucks for the consumer but business usually does. If your school payed for it, you can get the version for free! Whilst I could buy Windows 8. In addition, because I look every day in the Microsoft Store for this, my facebook is filled with Microsoft Store adds of this offer. The last few days, I could still see the offer but when I pressed on it, the link redirected me to Windows 10 Pro with full price.

As of today, I can no longer see the offer and I only see the office offers. I now that the link is still active, but it actually seems pretty much dead to me. And I am really frustrated because I can't understand why Microsoft cannot confirm that there will or will not be this kind of offer again. I know about Dreamspark and though other schools of my college applied to it, mine hasn't. But it doesn't matter, Dreamspark existed before and we had student offers, we even have office offers still working!

I have seen the same post you refer to, and this is why I chose to wait for Windows 10 rather than purchasing Windows 8. Now, the student version is MIA and I'd have to pay four times more for Windows 10 Pro, which just isn't going to happen. I am really strongly disappointed to have been misled.

Thanks for your feedback. How satisfied are you with this reply? Thanks for your feedback, it helps us improve the site. In reply to dlemaymt's post on August 4, Giannis Petrocheilos. In reply to InuHanyou's post on August 4, I just made an account to agree with all you guys as I went through the Microsoft Store online chat support and clearly asked them if there will be a discount for students and they said "Yes there will be but it isn't announced yet".

Well it's been one week and there is nothing on their site. I may ask again online chat support! It's the best place to ask. I feel mislead though. In reply to Giannis Petrocheilos's post on August 5, At least we do have some kind of verification that this will exist It would be nice if they released it in time for the school year I am guessing we probably won't see it until next year, but that is just speculation.

I don't know anything unfortunately. In reply to InuHanyou's post on August 5, According to their site it is gone, it is no longer listed in the student store! Has anyone of you reached Microsoft Answer desk? I can't reach them due to busy lines! In reply to Giannis Petrocheilos's post on August 6, Did you use the link I provided above?

I just checked and that link is still active. The second one worked better for me. In reply to InuHanyou's post on August 7, This site in other languages x.
